CHAPTER THREE

OUTSIDE RULES FOR CHILDREN

STREET SKILLS

ESCAPE THE CAR

Sample page of Street Skills

· A car or other vehicle is often the means by which the abductor removes the child from the neighborhood.

· Children should never approach a vehicle unless they are absolutely sure they know the occupants.

· Abductors entice children to walk near their vehicles and then pull them inside.

· If children routinely see the same car parked (or following them) on their normal walking routes (to and from school, etc.) they should report it to trusted adults immediately.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF A CAR APPROACHES:

· If a Stranger

· You don’t have to say anything!

· If someone you know

· Ask for the code word

· Always Keep Your distance

· Don’t get within grabbing distance

· Never approach a car

· If an Ice Cream Truck (it could be fake)

· Stay firmly on the sidewalk, turn, and RUN the other direction.  (Remember the car will have to turn around!)

· YELL AND GET HELP

NEVER GET INTO A CAR WITHOUT PARENTS’ PERMISSION

COMMON TRICKS (Strangers will Use)

· Say your mom sent them to pick you up.

· Your Mom was in an accident. Hurry I will take you to her!

· Ask you directions. Ask you to approach car to look at map or say they can’t hear you.

· Draw you into the car or van with a puppy, toy, other item.

WORST CASE

What if a person threatens you with a gun or a knife if you don’t get into their car?

· It is always safer to take your chances and run than to be trapped in their car!

Remember they can take your money, your clothes, but not YOU!
